“I’ve got a lot of family in nursing. I think it’s just our personalities. Sitting behind a desk isn’t really my thing, as I talk too much.

Once I looked after a 92-year-old lady for about 3 hours who had really bad arthritis in her hands. When she was discharged and I wheeled her to the car, she said ‘I’m going to do something for you, what’s your favourite quote?’ I have a tattoo that says fall down 7 times and stand up 8 – it’s all about if you get knocked down you get back up again. She said: ‘OK, I’ll come back to you.’  Two weeks later, she’s brought in some calligraphy for me with that quote. It’s absolutely beautiful, her show of appreciation was just – wow.  It’s on my wall at home.

Seeing people walk out of here is the best thing. It means they are well enough to go home.”
