Clinical Nurse Specialist and Registered Midwife

Kirketon Road Centre

“I was putting band aids on kids in the playground at primary school.  I always knew I wanted to be a nurse”.

At the Kirketon Road Centre I triage, do sexual health screens, outreach clinics, health promotion and methadone and suboxone dosing. We are a harm reduction service and work within this framework. I’m also here as a midwife, seeing high risk pregnant clients. An antenatal visit can range from a 5 minute check in to a long visit in a clinic room.

We are so uniquely placed with our outreach - if I get a phone call saying ‘we know there’s a pregnant woman living under the bridge at Woolloomooloo and we don’t think they’re accessing services,’ I can go down there with a Doppler and a blood pressure cuff and introduce myself and try to bring them up to KRC. If I can’t get them up here, at least I can do something right there and I’m a familiar face.  What matters most to me is providing good comprehensive pregnancy care to women who might otherwise not be engaged in any services whatsoever.”
