Genetics

  • NSW Genetics Education. The Centre for Genetics Education provides current and relevant genetics information to individuals and family members affected by genetic conditions and the professionals who work with them. The site has a number of factsheets related to particular genetic conditions.

Medications and Exposures During Pregnancy

  • The Substance Use in Pregnancy and Parenting Service (SUPPS) at the Royal Hospital for Women offers case management and assistance for women and families affected by alcohol and other drug use.  This also includes prescription medications that are necessary to maintain a mother’s health.   • Australian Epilepsy Pregnancy Registry - is a voluntary nationwide study enrolling women who are currently pregnant or who have recently given birth (with infants up to 9 months of age). The study is looking specifically at women with epilepsy taking anti-epileptic medication, women with epilepsy not taking anti-epileptic medication and women taking anti-epileptic medication for conditions other than epilepsy.

  • Alcohol and Drug Information Service (ADIS) is a 24 hour, confidential telephone service for people in NSW. It provides information, counselling, referral and advice to anyone concerned about their own or someone else's alcohol or other drug use.

  • UKTIS (The UK Teratology Information Service) provides a national service on all aspects of the toxicity of drugs and chemicals in pregnancy.  Their patient leaflets detailing "Best Use of Medicines in Pregnancy" (bumps) can be found at www.medicinesinpregnancy.org
  • MotherToBaby, a service of the non-profit Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (North American based), provides information about medications and other exposures during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.   
  • QUIT Program provides information on stopping smoking .

  • National Cannabis Prevention and Information Service provides evidence based information on cannabis and related harms.

  • National Register for Antipsychotic Medications in Pregnancy (NRAMP) is collecting information to address the gaps in knowledge surrounding women taking antipsychotic medication in pregnancy and the postpartum period (up to 12 months). Contact the NRAMP co-ordinator on (03) 9076 6591
  • Prescribing Medication in Pregnancy Database (Therapeutic Goods Administration) Australian Government. Department of Health and Aging. Information on prescribing medications in pregnancy geared towards health professionals (currently being updated)

Depression

  • beyondblue is a national, independent, not-for-profit organisation working to
    address issues associated with depression, anxiety and related substance misuse disorders in Australia. The website has a number of downloadable resources available including information related to emotional health during pregnancy and early parenthood and postnatal depression.

  • PANDA is the national Post and Antenatal Depression Association

Baby, Child and Family Health

  • Early Childhood Health Service and Community Health Centres are staffed by health professionals who specialise in child and family health. The staff at the hospital where you have your baby will link you to your local clinic, or you can find details in the phone book.
  • Tresillian provides positive and practical advice on caring for babies.

  • Karitane provides support on a wide range of issues concerning infants and children from birth to five (5) years of age.  Karitane Careline is a 7-day per week service with Child and Family Health Nurses providing consultation 1300 227 464
  • Family Planning NSW promote the reproductive and sexual health of the people of NSW. The website has a range of health information and fact sheets in both English and community languages.

  • The Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, in collaboration with the Children's Hospital at Westmead and Kaleidoscope, Hunter Children's Health Network have produced a range of factsheets which provide general health information for children on a variety of issues.
