Welcome to the Centre for Research in Nursing and Health (CRNH)
The Centre is a joint initiative between the School of Nursing University of Wollongong and St George Hospital and is accessible to all staff within the two institutions for research purposes.
The aim of the Centre is to enhance evidence based health care in nursing and midwifery through knowledge generation, knowledge transfer and knowledge implementation.
The Centre has established an extensive program of nursing research, education and postgraduate research training and supervision. We are working with clinicians in SESLHD to:
- Conduct research
- Develop, Implement and evaluate evidence based guidelines and
- Promote best practice
We work closely with the clinical facilities across SESLHD and the majority of projects are in collaboration with clinicians.

Speech Pathology - Paediatric
Provides assessment, therapy and management for children with communication difficulties. Referrals are taken from parents, allied health professionals and medical officers. Therapy services may be offered as groups, parent training or individual, and the type of therapy available for your child will be discussed with you. The service receives a large number of referrals so early referral is recommended.

How We Can Help You
Our Social Work team is available to offer support to patients, family members, carers, and friends. We offer emotional and practical assistance with any issues or concerns that may arise from being in hospital. This includes, but it not limited to:
- Changes related to a new or existing injury, illness, or disability
- Offer support to you and your family if you are anxious or stressed about your hospital stay
- Coping with loss, grief, and trauma
- Planning for when you leave hospital
- Accessing Respite or Permanent Residential Aged Care
- Providing information about services and other community resources including: psychological support, aged care support services, Centrelink, Housing NSW, NDIS, Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS), as well as other agencies and services

Inpatient services involve the diagnosis, treatment and management of swallowing and communication disorders.
Swallowing and communication difficulties in the inpatient setting can occur for many reasons, including but not limited to:
- Acute neurological changes (e.g. stroke)
- Neuro-degenerative diseases (e.g. dementia, Parkinson's disease)
- Conditions which may lead to or exacerbate swallowing difficuties, via change in cognitive or respiratory status (e.g. delirium, cardiac dysfunction, pneumonia, COPD)
- Oncologic disease including head and neck cancer, lung cancer, neurologic cancers, metastatic or advanced cancer, and haematological malignancies
Services are provided to all wards within the hospital.
Our weekend speech pathology service prioritises cases of urgent dysphagia management.
Referrals are made on a case by case basis, where there is staff, patient or family concern regarding acute or chronic changes in swallowing and/or communication.
Referrals within the hospital should be made via the eMR system, and followed-up with either a pager to the relevant speech pathologist on weekdays, or phone call via switch on weekends.
Our department provides outpatient services from Monday-Friday.
Outpatient services include:
- Speech, language and swallowing assessment and treatment for adults with health conditions affecting communication and swallowing
- Modified Barium Swallow (Video-Fluoroscopy Swallowing Study) clinics
- Voice disorders
- Lee-Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) - voice therapy for people with Parkinson's disease

St George Swallow Centre
A specialised bi-monthly multi-disciplinary clinic, diagnosing and treating complex swallowing disorders from all aetiologies including stroke, Parkinson’s disease, myopathies, head and neck cancer, laryngectomy, other neurological and degenerative diseases. This clinic specialises in state of the art assessment methods, and has a comprehensive research programme. Assessments conducted include Modified Barium Swallow, Videomanometry, oesophageal manometry (with impedance), pH testing impedance and FEES. A medical referral is required to attend this clinic. Voice and Chronic Cough / Airway Clinic
This clinic is run monthly with ENT and Speech Pathology, and provides endoscopic assessment of the larynx for voice and airway conditions. A medical referral is required to attend this clinic.
Cancer Care Centre
The St George Cancer Care Centre is a comprehensive multidisciplinary cancer service housing Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Haematology, Palliative Care, Allied Health and Nursing staff, all specialising in the management of all oncologic disorders. In particular, Speech Pathology attends the weekly Head and Neck Clinic and multi-disciplinary meeting.
Rose Cottage Day Hospital
A day rehabilitation service involving Medical Rehabilitation and Allied Health teams (Speech Pathology, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, Social Work and Clinical Psychology).

The Paediatric Multidisciplinary Feeding Service is a tertiary feeding service for children in our local area who have complex feeding problems such as cleft palate, neurodegenerative conditions, genetic syndromes, congenital heart disease and/or those who require enteral (tube) feeding. Emergency Department
The Emergency Department is open 24 hours seven days a week. The department is located on Gray Street with car drop off facilities located at the Gray Street main entry point.
St George Hospital has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in New South Wales and is the major trauma centre for the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District. At St George Hospital, we take pride in providing quality emergency care to people from the local community and from all over New South Wales. Each year thousands of patients seek treatment from St George Hospital’s Emergency Department.
Every person seeking emergency care is first assessed by a specialist triage nurse, whose job is to make sure the sickest patients get treated first. If you are feeling more unwell while you are waiting to be seen, please tell the triage nurse.

Parking

Concessional Parking
Eligible concessional rates for car parking is available. Fees are reviewed annually and subject to change to reflect consumer price index (CPI) increases.
