Eating Disorders

Welcome to the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) Eating Disorders website! Here, you'll discover a wealth of local resources to guide and support you on your path to good health. Our team is here to assist you throughout your recovery journey.

Remember, you are not alone. Eating Disorders can touch the lives of anyone, and it's important to know that there is support available. Did you know that over one million Australians are navigating their way through similar experiences? The encouraging news is that many individuals can achieve recovery without needing to go to hospital.

We encourage you to explore the resources we have to offer, whether this be relevant for you, assisting a loved one or information for a referring clinician.

In the case of chest pains, fainting or difficulty breathing, or if the GP has concerns (for example, due to cardiac complications or electrolyte disturbance), or there is a mental health emergency, go to the nearest emergency department or call 000.

In the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD), these are:

Your General Practioner (GP) can develop a mental health treatment plan with you and make a referral to a mental health professional (e.g., psychologist, mental health social worker, counsellor) and dietitian.

An Eating Disorder Plan gives you access to up to 40 Medicare-subsidised sessions with a mental health clinician and up to 20 Medicare-subsidised sessions with a dietitian over a 12-month period.  This means that a portion of the cost of your sessions with a health provider will be covered by Medicare, however, there are usually out of pocket costs as well.

Your GP may also make a referral to a psychiatrist or paediatrician if this is appropriate.

To find a local clinician, use the connect-ed clinician finder or Butterfly Foundation treatment services database.

You may be eligible for free Psychological Support Services due to financial hardship or low income (individual income below $55 000 or family income below $130 000).  A GP Mental Health Treatment Plan and Healthlink referral is required to the Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network.  Ask your GP for more information.
