The Gynaecological Cancer Centre at the Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) is available to all women with gynaecological cancer. The most common cancers are those arising from the ovaries, uterus and cervix. Less common cancers are those arising from the fallopian tubes, placenta, vagina and vulva.

During your visit to RHW, you will be under the care of the team of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.  Most members of the team have undertaken further training in cancer treatment and care to meet the varied needs of women.

The Gynaecological Cancer Centre opened in November 1986 with 7 beds in the gynaecology ward, 2 dedicated oncology nurses and a secretary.

Within 18 months new patient referrals had increased at least four-fold and oncology was requiring an ever increasing number of beds.  With the late Dr. John Greenwell, Medical Superintendent, a proposal was written for a new state-of-the-art Gynaecological Cancer Centre.  Macquarie House was renovated by the Benevolent Society to provide administrative offices, 25 inpatient beds, outpatient and brachytherapy facilities.

This Centre was officially opened by Hon Peter Collins MLA, Minister for Health in March 1990 and  became the benchmark for Gynaecological Oncology units throughout Australia and New Zealand and was replicated at the major Women’s Hospital in Singapore.

Today the Centre has weekly outreach clinics and surgery in Canberra and fortnightly clinics in Wollongong.

The unit treats 350 new invasive cancers per year;  performs 330 major operations per year and undertakes over 1000 cycles of chemotherapy per year.

Clinical research covers surgical management of vulvar, cervical and ovarian cancer, nutrition, lymphoedema and the laboratory is developing a screening test for ovarian cancer.

All patients attending the Menopause Hub requires a valid GP referral before we can book you an appointment.

Please note that we only accept electronic referrals (eReferrals). This is an electronic referral that is submitted on your behalf by your GP. This replaces paper, faxed and e-mailed referrals. We do not accept faxed, e-mailed or paper referrals.

A letter with your appointment date and time will be sent to your postal address. This booking process may take 7-10 working days to complete.

You will receive a SMS notification (if your GP consents for you to receive these updates in your referral) once the referral has been received, accepted by our clinic and triaged by the nurses.

Please allow 2-3 weeks for your appointment letter to arrive from when we have received your referral. If it has been over 3 weeks and you have not received your appointment letter, please call (02) 9382 6248.

The NSW Government has committed funding over four years (2022-23 to 2025-26) to establish services for people experiencing severe symptoms of menopause. The Agency for Clinical Innovation is leading a project to develop menopause services across NSW.

Whether information is needed about peri-menopause, MHT/HRT and alternatives, osteoporosis or how to locate a doctor interested in women's health, the AMS seeks to bring accurate, evidence-based information to health care workers and the wider community.

The Jean Hailes for Women's Health is an Australian nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and providing women's health education and resources. It focuses on improving women's physical and emotional well-being through research, clinical care, and public health initiatives.

The current wait for an appointment can vary from 3-9 months depending on the specialty clinic that you are required to attend.

As this is a public clinic you will not be able to choose which consultant you are able to see. Clinic appointments are covered by residents, registrars, fellows and consultants. The consultant will oversee your appointment but you may not be directly seen by them.

We sometimes have requests by patients to be seen by a female doctor. We will endeavour to facilitate this but are unable to guarantee that a female doctor will be available. This may mean additional wait times for your appointment or require your appointment to be rescheduled.

This is a public hospital clinic, if you have a valid GP or specialist referral and Medicare card you will not be billed.

If you do not have a valid Medicare card, you will have to pay a fee. (Please contact hospital cashier reception for a schedule of charges).

If you are from a country which has a Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement, you will not need to pay for your appointment. If this applies, we may ask to see a copy of your visa and passport.

If you are having a procedure for insertion of an Intra Uterine Device (IUD),  the IUD is not included in your visit. You will need to get a prescription from your GP and then purchase your IUD device from your local pharmacist before your appointment. Please ensure you bring the IUD to your procedure.

Clinic appointments can vary between 15 mins- 2 hours dependent on the specialty clinic you are attending.

As this is a public clinic, there may be unavoidable delays and additional waiting times.

  • Medicare card
  • GP or specialist referral letter
  • Any scans or blood tests results
  • Your IUD (if you’re booked for an IUD insertion)

All patients booked into a urodynamics procedure are required to have a urine test 2 weeks prior to their scheduled appointment.

Please see your GP for this urine test and ask them to forward the results to fax: (02) 9382 6246.

If there are any issues in getting urine test, please contact (02) 9382 6248 and ask to speak to one of the nurses to organise a urine test at the clinic.
