Radiation Oncology
How we can help you
Radiation therapy involves the use of high-energy radiation therapy to control or kill tumour cells. It may be used to cure disease, reduce symptoms such as pain, and/or to prevent disease recurrence. Radiation therapy is an effective and important part of the management of a range of cancers, it can also be used for non-cancerous diseases. It may be given on its own or with other forms of treatment such as chemotherapy or surgery.
Most modern radiation therapy techniques focus on accurately targeting cancer cells. Which means they only affect the part of your body that requires treatment while sparing the normal cells. Like having a routine X-ray, radiation therapy is painless.
Types of radiation therapy treatments include;
- Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
- Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)
- Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) for malignant and non-malignant diseases
- Total Body Irradiation (TBI) for bone marrow transplants
- Total Skin Electron Therapy (TSET) for the treatment of cutaneous lymphomas
- Volumetric Modulated Radiation Therapy (VMAT)
- Brachytherapy service includes treatment of gynaecological disease
- Interstitial sites and choroidal melanoma using eye plaques
Your assessment, treatment planning and care are delivered at our clinics and specialist radiation therapy facilities in our NCCC Radiation Oncology Department.

We are on the corner of High Street and Avoca Street in Randwick. The main public entrance is on Avoca Street. You may also enter the Cancer Centre from level 2 of the High St entrance to Prince of Wales Hospital.

If you have a suspected or confirmed cancer you may be referred by your medical specialist or your local family doctor to use our services. Please request your doctor to send us your referral letter and all relevant test results. Once we have received a completed referral, we will send you a confirmation appointment letter, which will tell you where your appointment is located and what information you should bring with you.

- Medical referral if you have it, relevant pathology results
- Current Medicare card or Veteran Affairs card
- Any Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card.
- Insurer details (for example: workers compensation, public liability or third party).
- Your Private Health Fund Membership card if you are currently insured with a private health fund.
- Recent x-rays or medical images and their reports, if applicable.
- Activities to keep you entertained while waiting (for example: a book, music player with headphones, crosswords). A television and magazines are available in the waiting area.

- Hormonal therapy for cancers that grow in response to your bodies hormones. This treatment uses synthetic hormones to block your bodies natural hormones. This helps to reduce the size and slow down the spread of the cancer.
- Targeted therapy - medicines that work on specific features of cancer cells to stop it growing and spreading.

Our Aboriginal Health Workers can help you understand ways to manage your health care. They can organise and take you to your appointments. They can also speak with your doctors and go to appointments with you to offer support.

Our Aboriginal Health Workers also provide healthy lifestyle and social support programs including land and water based exercise classes, Yarn Up

La Perouse Aboriginal Community Health Centre
Our La Perouse Aboriginal Community Health Centre provides services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their families. Prince of Wales Hospital and other health services provide clinics at the Centre where you can see specialist Doctors and allied health staff. The services provided include:
- Endocrinology - For if you have problems with your hormones e.g. Diabetes.
- Cardiology - For problems with your heart or blood vessels.
- Respiratory - For problems with your lungs, airways and blood vessels that help you breathe.
- Geriatrics - If you are an older Aboriginal person, this clinic helps with preventing and treating disease and disability.
- Neurology - For problems with your brain, spinal cord and nerves.
- Podiatry - For problems with your feet, ankles or lower limbs.
- Eye clinic - If you have problems with your eyes.
- Oral Health Services - For problems with your teeth, gums and your mouth and face that allows you to smile, speak or chew.
- Midwife Service - Supports pregnant women in their health care.
- Early Childhood Services - Carries out health checks for young children and provide information on parenting.
- Children’s Services - For children under the age of 16 years.
- Mental Health Services - Helps if you are experiencing problems with how you are feeling, thinking, behaving or interacting with others. Mental illnesses are of different types and severity. E.g. depression and anxiety.
- Drug and Alcohol Services - Supports you if you have addiction to alcohol or other drugs.

Heartlink - managing your heart problems at home
If you have heart problems or care for someone who does, the Heartlink service may be able to help. This service has nurses with trained in heart health who will monitor you and provide advice and activities so that you can manage your condition and stay as healthy as possible.
The Heartlink nurses can provide support, education and counselling to people with heart problems and their carers. They will work with your Doctors, the hospital and pharmacist and discuss what you need and develop a plan with you.
Our nurses may visit you at home and can also talk to you on the phone. This service is free.

Community Nursing Team
How we can help you
Community nurses visit people at home. They are able to discuss what you need and develop a health plan with you. Some of the things nurses can help with are: wound care, managing health problems such as diabetes, managing your medicines and bladder or bowel problems. They also provide care and support for people who have life threatening diseases or choose to die at home.
Nurses often work with your doctors to control sickness and pain symptoms. They can support you, your family and carers. They can also give health advice and falls prevention education, information about home-help services and health care equipment.
A community nurse can discuss ways to help you improve or cope with bowel or bladder problems. They also help people manage their urinary catheters. The appointment can be in your own home or at the hospital. For more information on continence click here.
This is a free service.
After receiving a referral a community nurse will phone you within 24 hours to arrange a time to come and visit you in your home.
