Information for Health Professionals - Headache Clinic

Our clinic is on Fridays from 9.30 am - 2.00 pm. 

Our clinic is located in the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Level 2 of the High Street Building, Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick NSW (building 2 on our campus map).

Associate Professor Alessandro Zagami specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and management of headaches.

We see patients with headaches and migraines over the age of 16 years.

Exclusion criteria 

Our service is unable to accept referrals for children under the age of 16 years.

Sydney Children's Hospital (SCH) holds Neurology Outpatient Clinics that see children suffering from headaches. All patients aged under 16 can be referred to SCH Neurology Outpatients Clinics. 

This headache clinic whilst located in the Prince of Wales Hospital is a private service and not part of public outpatients and all new and follow up appointments will incur a scheduled fee.

Your referral letter must include the following information:

• You must address the referral to A/Prof A. Zagami, not the hospital, clinic, outpatient department or JMO
• You must sign and date the referral, and include your provider number and practice address
• You must state the period of referral in months, or refer “indefinitely”
• You must provide this referral on or prior to the appointment date.
• You must provide patient details, including full name, address, date of birth, phone number and Medicare number
• Clinic name 
• Reason for referral 
• Provisional diagnosis 
• Clinical urgency
• Results from investigations.

We cannot process your referral if it does not include the above mandatory information.

If your patient is eligible for treatment, please fax the referral letter to (02) 9382 4265 or email: POWNeurology@health.nsw.gov.au.

Once received all referrals will be triaged within 7 days. The patient and GP will be contacted by mail. Should this date need to be rescheduled please phone (02) 9382 2422 or email POWNeurology@health.nsw.gov.au for and alternative time and date.

You may contact the Institute of Neurological Sciences on (02) 9382 2422 to follow up on a referral.

Urgent referrals 

If your patient needs to be seen urgently, please have them present to the Emergency Department at their nearest hospital. Or if semi urgent, the GP should call A/Prof Zagami directly. 

We will send your patient a letter by post with their appointment details. A member of our administrative team will contact your patient by phone if there are changes to their appointment. 

If your patient needs to change or cancel their appointment, they should phone, fax or email the Institute of Neurological Sciences on (02) 9382 2422. Due to the volume an interest in this clinic calls may be diverted to voicemail please leave a detailed message with your name, phone number.

If they miss an appointment, a letter will be sent to them and the referring GP.

A scheduled fee will be charged for all new and follow-up appointments. The Medicare rebate is 85% of the scheduled fee.
